The Navagio Beach Experience

by ElenaSergeeva

One of the highlights of visiting Zakynthos was definitely the Navagio beach experience. Also known as the Shipwreck beach, this secluded sandy bay has managed to amaze anyone who has been here or is dreaming of going just by looking at the photos which I am sure that you have all seen — and not once! The Navagio beach is one of the most photographed places in Greece, after Santorini of course.

Initially the beach was known as Agios Georgios or Saint George, until a shipwreck occurred in 1983 when a ship which was transporting illegal cigarettes, found its home on its shores. Since then the Navagio beach has become one of the most visited sites on the island.

The Blue Caves – a magical experience

Our trip started in the morning as we climbed into a glass bottom boat in Skinari to explore the famous Blue Caves. The Blue Caves are located on the northern coast of Zakynthos, the landscape is not like anything you have seen.

The best time to visit would be early morning or afternoon when the glistening sunbeams graciously dive into the crystal blue waters which will leave you breathless.

The beauty of exploring the caves in a glass bottom boat is actually because of its size which allows the boat to enter and pass through the caves, which is a magical experience. The rock creations which you will see inside are actually shades of pink, purple and green.

The Blue Caves trip lasts approximately 30 minutes and they run this service from 9 am until 7pm every day, leaving every 10 minutes. Skinari is actually the closest location to the Navagio Beach, you can be there in less than 15 minutes.

We got a bigger boat to go to the Navagio Beach and as we arrived there were dozens of visitors already there, enjoying this remarkable site. Yes, the beach gets very busy especially during the day, so be prepared to share it with other excited guests.

On our way to the Shipwreck beach

The boat left us there for an hour, which was just enough time to enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters and take photos of the famous shipwreck. On the way back the boat stopped for another quick swim, where we jumped into the deep blue waters of the lagoon, it felt like swimming in a natural swimming pool.
