The Ultimate Guide to Siargao: 14 Top Things to Do

by ElenaSergeeva

Siargao Island, often dubbed as the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines,” is a tropical paradise that offers more than just world-class waves. From pristine beaches to hidden lagoons, vibrant marine life, and lush jungles, Siargao has it all. This guide covers the top things to do on the island, practical travel tips, and when to visit to make the most of your trip.

Where is Siargao Located?

Siargao is a tear-drop shaped island located in the northeastern part of Mindanao in the Philippines, specifically in the province of Surigao del Norte. It sits at the edge of the Philippine Trench, which gives rise to the famous surf breaks, particularly at Cloud 9.

Siargao is part of a chain of islands scattered in the Pacific Ocean and is about 800 kilometers southeast of Manila. Its location makes it a prime spot for both surfing and eco-adventures, with lush mangrove forests, lagoons, and hidden caves to explore.

How to Get to Siargao

Siargao is relatively easy to reach, but it does require some planning. Here’s how to get there:

By Air: The quickest way to get to Siargao is by taking a direct flight to Sayak Airport (IAO) from Manila, Cebu, or Davao. Airlines such as Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and SkyJet offer regular flights. Once you land, it’s a 45-minute to one-hour drive to General Luna, the island’s main tourist hub. You can easily book vans or motorbikes for transport at the airport.

By Ferry: For a more budget-friendly option or if you’re coming from nearby islands, you can take a ferry. Ferries depart from Surigao City to Dapa Port on Siargao. Ferries typically take around 2-3 hours depending on sea conditions. From Dapa, it’s just a short ride to General Luna.

Alternative Routes: If you’re coming from Cebu or Manila, another option is to fly to Surigao City, and from there, take a ferry to Siargao.

14 Top Things to Do in Siargao

1. Surfing at Cloud 9

Siargao’s most famous attraction, Cloud 9, is a world-renowned surf spot. Known for its powerful waves and beautiful vistas, it’s a must-visit for surfers and spectators alike. The boardwalk provides an ideal viewing spot for both sunrise and sunset, making it a stunning place to soak in Siargao’s natural beauty.

  • For Beginners: Nearby Jacking Horse offers milder waves, ideal for those new to surfing. If you would like to learn how to surf, check out these surfing lessons.
  • Pro Tip: Peak surfing season runs from August to November when waves are at their best.

If you continue just a little further out from the boardwalk towards the Jacking Horse Trail there are several cafes which are perfect for relaxation and for soaking in the relaxed and laid-back atmosphere of Siargao while watching the surfers. The area is aptly named “Jacking Horse” because of the way the waves break, which tends to create a bit of a “jack-up” effect as they lift and form, similar to a bucking horse. This makes it a popular spot for novice surfers who want to practice on more manageable waves before advancing to the more challenging surf at Cloud 9.

2. Yoga and Wellness

For those seeking relaxation, Siargao offers various wellness options. Yoga studios and wellness retreats are sprinkled across the island, allowing visitors to unwind and rejuvenate. During our stay we booked a massage session at the Vultun, which is located in the area of the Jacking Horse Trail. You can hear the waves breaking and feel the wonderful breeze right from inside the massage cabin.

  • Pro Tip: Try a morning yoga session to start your day with a fresh, relaxed mindset amidst Siargao’s natural beauty.

3. Island Hopping Adventure

One of the to things to do in Siargao is visiting the surrounding islands with a classic island-hopping tour. These unique islands offer sun, sand, and adventure all in one day.

Area where the boats depart for the islands

Our first stop was at Guyam Island: A small, lush island with clear waters, ideal for snorkeling and lounging. The name Guyam translates as the small ant. There are several cafes on this small island where you can enjoy a refreshment. Try the mango coffee its a popular drink around here. I learned about it from our friendly local guide Rex who was also an excellent photographer and helped me take these photos.

We then headed towards the Naked Island: A sandbar surrounded by turquoise waters, ideal for sunbathing and swimming. This is a pristine beach with no facilities.

The last stop of the day was at Daku Island which is the largest island, perfect for a beachside picnic. Daku’s local village offers a glimpse into island life. Here we enjoyed a fantastic freshly prepared seafood and fruit spread known as the “boodle fight”.

The term “boodle fight” originated from the Philippine military, where it describes a communal style of eating that involves sharing food spread out on banana leaves with no utensils, only bare hands. The word “boodle” itself was military slang for food, and “fight” refers to the playful competition and camaraderie that comes from eating quickly and grabbing food alongside fellow diners.

Boodle fight

In a traditional boodle fight, soldiers, regardless of rank, gather around a long table covered with banana leaves on which an assortment of food is spread, typically including rice, grilled fish, pork, seafood, vegetables, and fresh fruits. The food is arranged so everyone can easily reach and share, symbolizing unity, equality, and teamwork. This communal feast reinforces camaraderie and a sense of equality as everyone eats together without hierarchical divisions.

Today, boodle fights have become a popular way to celebrate family gatherings, festivals, and social events in the Philippines, symbolizing friendship, unity, and shared enjoyment.

  • Pro Tip: A local guide can take you further upstream to explore the river’s scenic landscape. Make sure to wear a bathing suit as water gets into these small blue boats.

7. Explore the Coconut Palm Forest

A drive through the vast coconut palm forest offers some of the most iconic views of Siargao. The rows upon rows of tall palms are mesmerizing and provide a serene escape into nature. If you don’t have much time to dive into the heart of the forest you can also admire it from above.

  • Pro Tip: Bring a camera, as this spot is perfect for photography. Early morning or late afternoon offers the best lighting.

8. Visit Pacifico Beach

For those seeking a quieter surf and beach scene, Pacifico Beach is a great alternative. Located on the northern coast, it boasts excellent surf breaks and a tranquil atmosphere. Unfortunately it was a cloudy and windy day when we visited the Pacifico beach and could not enjoy it in its full glory.

  • Pro Tip: Stay overnight in Pacifico to enjoy the beach at a slower pace and discover a few local bars and eateries.

9. Watch the Sunset from the Sunset Bridge

The Sunset Bridge, located near General Luna, is a popular spot to take in Siargao’s stunning sunsets. Spanning a tranquil river surrounded by lush mangroves, this bridge offers unobstructed views of the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and pink.

  • Pro Tip: Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot on the bridge and watch as locals paddle along the river, creating a serene and memorable scene.

10. Relax at the Secret Beach

The Secret Beach in Siargao, also known by locals as Secret Spot, is a lesser-known, tranquil beach located a bit off the beaten path, making it ideal for those looking to escape the crowds. Although it’s not as famous as Cloud 9 or Pacifico Beach, the Secret Beach offers a serene slice of paradise with crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and an atmosphere of complete relaxation.

The Secret Beach is nestled between the more popular surf spots of General Luna and Malinao on the southeastern side of Siargao. It’s not heavily signposted, so it can be tricky to find without local guidance.

The beach boasts powdery white sand, turquoise waters, and lush coconut palms. It’s a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the natural scenery.

11. Experience the Nightlife

Siargao’s nightlife is lively yet laid-back. For a fun evening out check out the Captain Luna area for live music events, DJ sets, and a vibrant atmosphere. During our trip there was a full moon party taking place at the Reef Beach Resort.

  • Pro Tip: Nightlife on the island is casual, so dress comfortably and embrace the island vibe. Ask the locals if there are any parties taking place on the island during your visit or look out for the posters.

  • Grilled Seafood: With Siargao’s rich marine life, fresh seafood is abundant.
  • Pan de Coco – This bread is filled with sweetened coconut meat, making it a delicious tropical treat. The bread is soft, while the coconut filling gives it a rich, moist texture.
  • Pan de Surf is a local twist on traditional Filipino bread, inspired by Siargao’s vibrant surf culture. It’s a unique type of bread often sold in bakeries or small cafes around Siargao and occasionally found in other surfing spots in the Philippines. It is shaped like a surfboard.
  • Cassava chips are a popular snack made from the root vegetable cassava, also known as yuca or manioc. Cassava is a starchy tuber native to South America but widely grown and enjoyed across Africa, Asia, and the Philippines.

When is the Best Time to Visit Siargao?

The best time to visit Siargao depends on what you’re looking to experience, as the island has distinct seasons that offer varying conditions for activities like surfing, snorkeling, and sightseeing.

1. For Surfing (August to November)

If you’re visiting Siargao for its famous surf breaks, particularly Cloud 9, the best time is during the surf season from August to November. This period sees consistent, large waves, ideal for experienced surfers. The Siargao International Surfing Cup takes place in September, drawing local and international surfers to the island.

  • Pros: Strong, reliable waves; peak surf conditions; exciting surf competitions.
  • Cons: Higher visitor numbers; some areas may be busier due to the surf crowd.

2. For Beach and Island Hopping (March to May)

For calm, sunny days perfect for island hopping, beach lounging, and snorkeling, visit during the dry season from March to May. This period is the peak summer season in the Philippines, offering crystal-clear waters, fewer chances of rain, and calm seas ideal for visiting nearby islands like Daku, Guyam, and Naked Island.

  • Pros: Ideal beach weather; clear waters for snorkeling and island hopping.
  • Cons: High temperatures; more tourists, especially during Holy Week and summer holidays.

3. Low Season for a Quieter Experience (December to February)

If you’re looking for fewer crowds and don’t mind occasional rain, the cooler months from December to February are a great time to visit Siargao. While this period sees more rainfall, it’s often in short bursts rather than continuous downpours, leaving plenty of time for beach days and exploring. I visited Siargao end of January and we experienced several showers during our trip.

  • Pros: Fewer tourists; quieter accommodations and beaches; cooler temperatures.
  • Cons: Unpredictable rain showers; less ideal surf conditions.

Overall Recommendation:

For the best balance of good weather, manageable crowds, and optimal conditions for a variety of activities, March to May is often considered the ideal time to visit. However, surfing enthusiasts will find the August to November season unparalleled for catching waves.

Conclusion

Siargao is a dream destination for surfers, adventurers, and beach lovers alike. With its diverse attractions and laid-back vibe, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re riding the iconic waves at Cloud 9, island hopping in azure waters, or exploring hidden caves and lagoons, Siargao promises an unforgettable experience. Just be sure to plan your visit according to your preferred activities and prepare for an island escape like no other!
