A Guide To Visiting Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Bali

by ElenaSergeeva

There are plenty of rice terraces to visit in Bali and each of them are uniquely different from each other. The most popular one to visit out of all of them is Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Bali which is close to Ubud.

Tegalalang has a lot going for it in terms of rice fields and it stands out for its clear display of the Balinese irrigation system (also known as Subak). This works throughout the rice terrace by a connected system of canals which allows water to flow from the nearby temples directly into the rice paddies.

One of the things that intrigued me the most when I visited compared to the others is that it is very eye-catching. The immense greenery which surrounds your every step makes this place extremely picturesque and it is great place to stop off for photos.

Before coming here, you might be wondering how to get there and the activities you can do once you arrive. All of this and more will be covered inside of the guide below.

1. How To Get There

Tegalalang Rice Terrace is roughly a 20-minute drive from the center of Ubud by car or bike.

I would definitely recommend visiting while you are staying in Ubud because of how easily accessible it is. To get there, you simply head north from Ubud town until you reach the district of Tegalalang and you will eventually find the rice terrace on the main road.

If you aren’t confident driving a scooter yet, you can always order a taxi there which will take you right outside of the entrance. This should cost no more than $11 there and back to Ubud and the taxis tend to arrive pretty quickly after you order them.

If you are seeing multiple tourist attractions in one day, it is best to rent a car as this will save you more money. If you aren’t keen on driving a car either, hiring a driver is a solid option.

2. My Experience At Tegalalang Rice Terrace

The first time I arrived here was with our local guide that we hired for the whole of our trip around Indonesia.

As soon as he took me here, I knew I had seen it before on several popular Youtube Vlogs who had made videos here in the past. However, it looked completely different in real life and the sense of natural aliveness and lush greenery really swept me off my feet.

The way the rice paddies were structured almost didn’t look real and the way they were piled on top of each other was truly a sight to behold. I walked up and down the thin little paths with the ginormous swaying palm trees following me with every step I took.

When coming here, I knew I also had to make sure that I got photos on the swing that was there. Maybe that was the natural tourist inside of me, but who knows!

3. When You Should Go

Opening Hours: 8AM-6PM

The best time to visit would be either early in the morning when it first opens or later on in the evening. This will make sure you avoid the peak times when there are more tourists and when it is overly hot which will be more tiring to walk around.

In terms of the time of year, it is best to go during the dry season rather than the wet season. Ubud rains a lot in the wet season and the last thing you want is to spend most of your trip inside.

For this reason, any month between April and October will be best.

4. All Prices and Fees

Tegalalang Entrance Fee: 10,000 IDR ($0.66) per person

Tegalalang Parking Fee: 5,000 IDR ($0.33)

Tegalalang Swing Price + Photo: 150,000 IDR ($9.92) per person

Additional Donation: 5000 – 10,000 IDR ($0.33 – $0.66)

Sunrise Photo Point: 50,000 IDR ($3.31)

5. What To Do There

There are plenty of things to do while you are at Tegalalang but honestly, a lot of the best things to do involve photos.

A complete guide to Tegalalang Rice Terrace in Bali

The reason for this is that there are so many different spots that are photogenic. One of these includes the famous sunrise point where you can get a photo on the swing while being super high in elevation.

Another one is at the second swing where you can get a photo with the Bali love sign. These are two swings that any avid traveler must add to their instagram collection!

Besides these, you can get a bunch of other shots while walking through the rice paddies allowing you to show off the trail of astonishing greenery behind you.

Additional activities that you can do while visiting the rice terrace include going on the Sky Bike and using the Zipline. I cover these in further detail below.

6. Important Tips To Remember When Visiting

There are several things to keep in mind before coming here to make your trip as smooth as possible. Here are a list of handy tips to follow below:

  • Brings Food and Drinks: Although there are restaurants not too far away from this rice terrace, it is still a good idea to bring food and drinks to satisfy your needs. Especially when you are in the middle of the rice fields and feeling hungry or thirsty. Water is particularly important because Bali can get hot and you will probably sweat a lot. Keeping some on you will be reassuring and you can enjoy your time there more.
  • Be Respectful: Just like visiting any other tourist attraction in Bali (especially temples), it is important to be respectful of the culture. The local people are very tolerant, but it is still wise to follow common practice. This includes speaking quieter when talking with locals and sticking to the walking paths on the rice terraces.
  • Bring Small Money: It is common for you to get asked to give a small donation while at Tegalalang. For this reason, it is advised to bring some small change just incase. When I came, I gave a 10,000 rupiah note which was sufficient and they were happy with it.
  • Spray Yourself With Bug Spray: The rice fields are home to many mosquitos and insects that love to bite. For this reason, make sure to spray your arms and legs with bug repellent. This will get those pesky bugs away from you while enjoying Bali’s finest nature.
  • Don’t Wear Flip flops: It goes without saying that it isn’t a good idea to go in your flip flops. It might not seem like a bad idea but you will need to wear some solid shoes whilst walking around the rice terraces as it can get slippery and sturdy shoes will make it easier to walk.
  • Avoid Peak Times: The earlier the better when it comes to visiting here. Tegalalang is an extremely popular tourist attraction, and it is best enjoyed when there are less people around. If you can, aim to get here by 8AM or slightly earlier. In this way, you can go on the swing and see everything before it gets too busy. Alternatively, you can go later in the evening where there will also be less people. The benefit of this is that it is cooler and has more of a peaceful vibe.
  • Sunscreen – Just like visiting any other hot country, being in Bali is no different. Make sure to apply sunscreen, especially if you decide to visit during midday when it is the hottest outside.

7. Facilities At Tegalalang Rice Terrace

Here is a list of facilities at Tegalalang Rice Terrace which are on the grounds or close by:

  • Parking Area
  • Toilet
  • Hotel
  • Restaurant
  • Souvenir Shop
  • ATM
  • Food and Drinks

8. Additional Things To Do

Although it is common for most people who visit to get photos with the swings and hike around, there are also other fun activities that you can do here which are less known. Here are some examples of these activities:

Go Ziplining

Price for Zipline: 350,000 IDR ($23.16)

Although I didn’t go on the zipline during the visit, I was surprised to find out that you can actually take one which is close by. Of course, this is a touristy activity to do and it isn’t cheap costing almost $25 a pop. However, if you want to try out this unique experience while you are here, the option is there.

Sky Bike
Price for Skybike: 450,000 IDR ($29.77)

As an alternative, another wacky thing you can do is ride the sky bike across the rice terrace. This is more expensive than the zipline but it looks like a lot of fun if that is what you are into. The most exciting element is the fact that you have all the jungle greenery below you as you ride.

The way this works is that you are connected to a harness with a wire above you and the bike is attached to a wire at the bottom. You then pedal the bike and it moves across the wire from one end to the other. Two people can sit at the same time and you can enjoy the views while being high in the sky on a bike.

11. FAQ’s

1. How Long Should You Spend There?

This will depend on how much you enjoy it and what you are doing there. I spent around an hour there which is more than enough time to go on both swings and walk around the rice paddies. A rough estimate for most people would be 30-90 minutes in total.

2. Do The Farmers Work There?

Yes, although it is a tourist attraction, this is a real place and is part of Balinese tradition for farmers to work on the rice fields. It is fun to watch them in action and you might find yourself in conversation with one if you are lucky!

3. Why Is It A Good Idea To Visit?

Not only is this place a natural wonder, but it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This makes it one of only three in all of Bali!

Just this reason alone makes it special in addition to the fact that it is a beautiful place to see.
